I noticed that there aren't that many walkthroughs out there for Alone in the Dark. At least, there aren't many when you compare it to a game like Resident Evil 5. I bring this up because I had to look for a guide recently. I was stuck in one particular point in AitD (episode 7: Subway Station) and nothing was working. So I figured I would throw in some helpful tips for this particular bit. And yea, I'm past the Subway siege now. In fact I am hopping all around the Park looking for Evil Roots, aaah good times.
Common Problems with Subway Station
This is what happened to me. My health was horribly low and it would only take a few blows to finish me off. And, of course, this would end up as one of the scenes with 8 Humanz going right for you. Not to mention that killer knife-thrower who stalks you right afterwards.
Another issue is fire bullets. You will need fire bullets or sticky bombs (well, some petrol-based weapon in general) for this part. That is the only way to snuff out these awful creatures. So, isn't it just my bad luck that I ended up here with no (you heard me, nada, zilch, absolutely no) explosive bottles?
Just how careless was I up until this point? I also found out that the battery was low for my torch! I don't carry around batteries since I would rather bring along sticky tape (for the bombs). Oh and that stupid lens takes up one of the slots in your jacket now so it's not like there is additional space for batteries.
Salvation in the Utility Rooms
Alright, what you do here depends on which of those situations applied to you. If you decide to hide in one of the darker rooms, you will need your torch. Unless your aim is awesome in the dark. That somehow sounds … dodgier than I expected.
Here are your options. As you move towards the survivors on the train, the first group of Humanz will pop up. Dodge them and run towards the stairs. There is a bathroom, to your right, right in front of the stairs. There is another one in the alcove behind the stairs (it's close to the fire). Go for the utility room in either case. Both of them have explosive bottles and ammo so does it make a difference which one you choose?
In a way, yes. The one in front of the stairs was darker and will have a Humanz woman jumping down from the ceiling vent (or side, depending on how often you end up playing this bit). This one has more explosive bottles than the other one as well as batteries for your torch. The one behind the stairs will have flares and first aid spray. Look, you can always access either utility room via the vent in the ceiling so it doesn't matter. What does matter is which room you access first. Do you desperately need the health? If so, the back one is for you. Plus, I also found that the Humanz took a bit of time coming for me in the far-off room whereas they were right at my heels if I headed for the closer bathroom. Oh and I should mention that the flares (found in the second bathroom) were vital to my beating the knife-thrower.
How I Finished this Sequence
So here's what I did. When the first wave came for me, I ran like a hunted fox towards the far-off bathroom. I ran in, grabbed explosive bottles, created fire bullets and peeked out of utility room. If the Humanz have followed you, they will probably be lurking around the entrance to the bathroom. You can hold them off for a few minutes by shooting a bullet at the bathroom door. The door will soon be on fire and the Humanz will keep a distance. Use this time to heal, pick up extra bullets and the flares. By the way, if they are already halfway in the bathroom, you can retreat into utility room and shoot the utility room door instead.
Now, shoot down the group of four and then wait for the second wave. Shoot them down and then wait for the knife-thrower. This guy was a tough one to beat, more so because of the space. I didn't last too long if I confronted him outside the bathroom. Alright, so my sticky bomb's aims leave much to be desired. This is what I ended up doing. I did a bit of hide-and-shoot with me ducking into the utility room and him sulking at the bathroom entrance. Wait for him to approach your hideout. As he gets closer to the door, strafe to the right side so he can't see you immediately. Break open one of the flares and chuck it to the left-most corner right outside the utility room. Mr Knife-Guy will then casually walk up to it and keep staring at it. Hit him with a dose of fire bullets (or sticky bomb if you can maintain a distance). It should be really easy to kill him when he is dazed like this.
