Catherine is not necessarily an indie game as much as it is the kind of game that falls on the line of quirky. Quirky (and TRPGs) is what Atlus Games does and they don’t scrimp with this Xbox 360 title. This game has heavy puzzle elements along with a rather twisted (even dark) storyline.
Out protagonist is a regular Joe, unsure as to his future and what he wants from it. So he stays in a rut satisfied that this was life had to offer. Then his girlfriend of the time Katharine pops the question to him. He has been with her for a very long time, and expects to marry and be with her.
But suddenly he finds himself whenever he sleeps thrust into an odd game of survival – he and other men turned sheep have to climb up a tower made of blocks to escape death. The men around him are dying in their sleep - with rumors of a witch on the loose that hunts male cheaters in their dreams.
Speaking of cheaters, he suddenly and mysteriously meets Catherine, a person that is a 360 from Katharine in personality, and looks. He tries to stay faithful but finds himself with her at times he cannot remember. The mystery of who this other woman is, mixed with a bit of puzzle solving, quirky if not morbid humor, and heavy handed moral lessons still makes this title (although biased a bit against men) interesting to try out. There are even three play modes (that you can change mid game) that allow you to skip through the puzzles to see more story, to brain teaser puzzles that change you every step of the way.
