Turok: The Newest Dinosaur Fighter Rocks and Socks
If you don’t recall all of the hype, the many commercials that were saturating the web, the TV and nearly every bus stop that you could drive by, then you are forgetting the third quarter of 2008, which saw the release of the long awaited, much anticipated dinosaur shooter classic, Turok. In a nutshell, this game rides on the notion of a special forces dude who ends up in a jungle somewhere, somehow and has to fight off dinosaurs and enemies who are trying to connive together to bring evil to the world. Touchstone and Propaganda Games were the brainstorming neophytes behind this conception, which has netted them plenty of hype, and allowed them to brandish one of the more successful shooter games because of the uniqueness and well produced games that have always been the status quo in the Turok series. And this one is no different. In fact, it’s the best Turok yet, and will remain that way for quite some time. Now on to the goodies.
The Graphics are the best part of Turok and are simply amazing and brilliant. They created a brand new graphics engine that utilizes the full power of the next generation consoles and makes the screen shots realistic and invigorating. The dinosaurs look pretty real and they can really create gory mess out of your innards if you are not too careful.
The controls are virtually identical to all other versions of Turok, and to most first-person-shooters for that matter. When this game was created the makers decide to shift the focus on a more movie-like feeling, which includes much more in-game films and cinematic cut scenes with plenty of babble to thicken the plot of the game. My favorite addition to this game is the stealth kill option. This allows you to sneak up on different beasts and slit their throats with your serrated military Bowie knife, or cut their intestines out of their gullets by stabbing them in the bellies. However, after a few hundred of such kills are performed, they do lose their grander and grace.
The worst part of the game are these little and very annoying bugs that you must constantly hack and slash through. The boards could be larger and more enjoyable, but these damned little bugs come at you everywhere you go, making maneuvering a pain in the ass because you know that you have to kill a hundred of these little suckers just to get anywhere in the game. This also causes for a frequent low ammo problem that causes you to get your butt kicked even more when real enemies present themselves, and its not like killing little bugs gives you more ammo for your machine gun. A decent multiplayer is glitch ridden and hangs all of the time on Xbox Live.
"This game reminds of a more in-depth Turok game that is definitely a good platform for them to build the series upon for the next generation consoles, namely the Xbox 360."
My Score: 6.5 out of 10
